GUWAHATI: Assam ended their Ranji Trophy campaign with a splendid performance from the batsmen of the team. The match also produced first century of the season from a batsman of Assam.
Gokul Sarma was the centre stage on the last day of the tie in Kanpur against Uttar Pradesh as the right handed batsman, who narrowly missed a couple of centuries this season, finally reached three-figure playing a gutsy knock. The batsman remained not out on exactly 100 when the match came to an end today. Sarupam Purkayastha and Pallav Das also played two responsible knocks during the day.
Assam started from their overnight score 102-0 but lost both the openers- Rishav Das (37) and Rahul Hazarika (63) very early parts of the day. However two senior batsmen Gokul and Sarupam thereafter stitched the damage nicely and didn’t allow Uttar Pradesh to take control on the game. The duo on the third wicket partnership added 112 runs. Gokul took 208 balls to score unbeaten 100 and there were 11 hits to the fence. On the other hand Sarupam smashed 12 boundaries during his 125 balls 67 runs knock. Captain Amit Sinha failed to open his account today but it didn’t make any negative impact on Assam innings as thereafter Gokul and Pallab negotiated opponent bowlers without facing too much difficulties. Pallav also remained not out on 40.
It was the last game for Assam in the season and they finished the competition collecting 21 points from nine outings.
Brief scores: Assam 175, 317-4, Uttar Pradesh 619.
