GUWAHATI: Assam suffered second defeat in the Ranji Trophy this season and this time against Tamil Nadu. Assam lost the tie by an innings and 70 runs in Chennai here on friday.

It was the failure of top order batters again that cost the match for Assam. Although the openers gave a good start to the visitors in the second innings and ended the day III at 60-0 on Thursday. However the story was not the same today as the side failed to give a gutsy resistance to the opponent bowlers. Except Rishav Das, all other top order batters today returned into the pavilion quickly.

It was Rahul Hazaarika (40) who first got out today when Assam added just 13 runs on the board. The side then quickly reduced to 129-6. Subham Mondal (33), Riyan Parag (15), Gokul Sharma (2), Abhishek Thakuri (11) and Swarupam Purkayastha (1)- no one was able to come out as per expectation with the bat.

However Rishav and Akash Sengupta on the eighth wicket added 35 runs which made the total a little respectable. Assam , Tamil Nadu, Ranji Trophy, who came into bat after the departure of Rahul, faced 121 balls and scored 58 with the help of four boundaries and two over boundaries. Akash remained not out on 25 and there were five boundaries in his 63 balls knock.

Ajith Ram, 5-70, was the most successful bowler for Tamil Nadu in the second innings.

It may be mentioned here that in reply to Tamil Nadu's first innings total 540 Assam were bowled out 266 in the first innings and were forced to follow on.

After the end of the sixth round Assam, collected 11 points, are at 7th position in the points table. Tamil Nadu placed at 5th place in the table with 15 points.
