GUWAHATI: First Olympic medal winner from Assam Lovlina Borgohain is expected to arrive in the city on August 11. Assam Amateur Boxing Association would welcome the boxer following all COVID rules.

Lovlina, who won bronze medal in women welterweight category, is yet to receive her medal which would be officially handed over to the boxer tomorrow after the final bout between B Surmeneli of Turkey and Gu Hong of China. Lovlina lost her semi final bout to B Surmeneli.

The Secretary General of Boxing Federation of India Hemanta Kalita, who is also the Secretary of the Assam Amateur Boxing Association, informed The Sentinel that as per the schedule Lovlina will reach India from Tokyo on August 9 and she is expecting to arrive in Guwahati two-day later.

Commenting on the celebration of Lovlina's success Kalita said, "It's a glorious moment for us and we perhaps would give her a rousing welcome unless there is no COVID-19 pandemic. Still we will try to welcome her in the best possible way following all COVID-19 protocols.

It's indeed a proud moment for the Assam Amateur Boxing Association as the State got its first Olympic medal through this event. During the discussion with The Sentinel Kalita found it a little bit emotional. "It was around 2007 when we started to work with a proper plan to create quality boxers from the State. It took nearly 14 years to produce a medal winner in the Olympics. This is really a proud moment for us. We will continue our work and will try to produce more and more champion boxer from the State," said Kalita.

He also added: "Lovlina has a very good chance to win a medal in the next Olympics too. We are expecting that Shiva Thapa will also join her in the Paris Olympics and will bring medals for us. He is really working hard."
