GUWAHATI: The new committee of the Assam Olympic Association (AOA) is likely to be constituted without an election.

Most of the candidates today withdrew their nomination papers and requested Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal to take initiative to form the new committee of the premier organization of the State. The committee will be constituted during the next Annual General Meeting of the Assam Olympic Association which will be held in the city on November 10.

The AOA election was scheduled to be held for 22 posts and altogether 68 candidates submitted their nomination papers earlier. Today was the last day of withdrawal of nomination papers. The Chief Minister has already been elected unopposed for the post of the president.

Returning officer Bijon Mahajan informed the media, “Good numbers of candidates withdrew their names today. However, exact figures will be announced tomorrow as some official work is still left before we can confirm that the nomination papers are valid.”

Sources from the AOA today said, “Except a few, most of the candidates today withdraw their nomination papers after a meeting with the Chief Minister in the morning.”

When asked about the reason behind the mass withdrawal of nomination, AOA sources said: “If the election is held, a few heavyweight candidates may bite the dust and so they started to lobby against elections and some of our sports organizers also switched over to their camp.”

Meanwhile, the president of the Assam Archery Association Jayanta Boro today informed the media that he will not withdraw the nomination papers and will contest in the election. “I have already submitted the nomination paper and will contest,” said Boro.
