Guwahati: The Centenary Celebration of Sports Journalism in Assam got under way ceremonially under the auspices of Assam Sports Journalists Association with a mega felicitation ceremony. The event was held at the Deshbhakta Tarun Ram Phookan Indoor Stadium in the city today
The inaugural ceremony was graced by Assam Legislative Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary as the chief guest. The other dignitaries present on the occasion Olympian sprinter Anuradha Biswal, Arjuna awardee paddlers Kamlesh Mehta and Monalisha Barua Mehta, Asian Games medalist shooter Jaydeep Das and Director of Sports and Youth Welfare Nivedan Das Patowary and others, over 100 journalists including Samudra Gupta Kashyap, Premadhar Sarma, Balendra Mohan Chakravarty, Pabitra Gogoi, Jugal Kishore Saikia, Jayanta Das, Subodh Malla Barua and many others were honoured for their contributions to sports journalism in the state of Assam.
Speaker Daimary stressed on the need to focus more on the local sports and indigenous games by the journalists "I sincerely believe that there should be more coverage of sports news, especially local sports, in both print and electronic media. Indigenous sports should also be highlighted," Daimary said.
Former Olympian Anuradha Biswal, who hails from Odisha, thanked the sports journalists for bringing the talented sportspersons to limelight. She said journalists have played a major role in the development of sports in the country.
Kamalesh Mehta too stressed on the need to focus more on the local and indigenous sports by the journalists.
Earlier welcoming the huge gathering ASJA president Subodh Malla Barua said there will be a series of events throughout the year and in several places across the state.
ACA Vice President Porikhit Dutta and Topcem Cement President (Sales and Marketing) Dr Anil Kapoor were also felicitated by the organizing committee for being with the ASJA all the time in its various activities.
