Imphal: Nagaland has grabbed a total of 20 medals at the North East Regional Sports Week, which culminated on Tuesday.

Of these 20 medals, four medals are gold; four are silver and 12 are bronze.

With this figure, at the end of the tournament, Nagaland ranked third in the medal tally behind Manipur and Assam.

In a standout, player for the boxing discipline, Archana Thapa, gold medalist (48kg) from Nagaland won best promising boxer for the women category.

The Nagaland team was led by Zhopovi Zecho, DSO Kohima as chef de mission. A total of 78 athletes with 11 officials from Nagaland participated in five disciplines including archery, badminton, boxing, football, and table tennis.

The Northeast regional sports week witnessed about 700 participants with coaches and officials of the seven northeastern states namely Manipur, Nagaland, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Sikkim, and Tripura.

The event was organized by the Youth Affairs and Sports Department and funded by the North Eastern Council (NEC) which was held in commemoration of 75 years of Independence and in celebration of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.

Players like Vikehietuo Kense and Tovali Shohe grabbed bronze medals in mixed doubles and Chubanungla and Yashikala won bronze in women's double in badminton.

In boxing, Archana Thapa secured the gold medal for 48kg, SH. Shila Devi gold medal for 52 kg, H.Jamuna Devi silver medal for 57kg, Sanju silver for 63kg, Nirmal bronze in 60kg, and Monu secured silver for 73kg.

Among the boys, Sohil secured a gold medal for 60kg, Sachin a silver for 57kg, Ruokuovotuo bronze in 75kg, and Jhonny Lotha bronze in 70kg.

In archery discipline, Edikunu Rikha secured gold for recurve division. The men team won a bronze medal both in the compound and recurve and the Women's team took a bronze medal in both compound and recurve.

For the mix team, Nagaland won a bronze medal in both compounds and recurve. For table tennis, the Nagaland women's team won a bronze medal in the team event.

Meanwhile, in football discipline, the Nagaland girl's team lost their semifinal match against host team Manipur by 4-0 to miss out on a medal.
