GUWAHATI: The OIL-ASJA Sports Awards were conferred in a glittering ceremony held in a city hotel today.
Commonwealth Games gold medalist lawn bowls player Nayanmoni Saikia was presented the RG Baruah Best Sportsperson of the Year Award which consisted of a cheque of Rs 50,000, trophy, gamosa and a citation.
This time NN Singha Best Junior Sportsperson of the Year award was handed over to swimmer Astha Choudhury. Astha's mother and grandmother received the award, consisting of a cheque of Rs 25,000, trophy, gamosa and a citation, on her behalf.
Nurul Amin Best Team of the Year award went to Oil India FC (Football) while Pulin Das Lifetime Achievement Award was conferred on veteran sports journalist and sports organizer Balendra Mohan Chakravarty.
National record holder athlete Amlan Borgohain was awarded the Special Jury Award. Amlan's father received the award. Amlan was awarded Rs 20,000 and a trophy along with gamosa. Three promising sportspersons – Sahil Dey (chess), Priyanuj Bhattacharya (table tennis) and Upasha Talukdar (gymnastics) – were conferred the Assam Sports Journalism Centenary Year Scholarships. They were given Rs 10,000 each.
Former athlete Tayabun Nisha, former badminton player Madhurjya Baruah, former footballer Tohsen Bora, former swimmer Mithoo Borooah and international lawn bowls player Tania Choudhury, secretary of the Lawn Bowling Association of Assam Naba Basumatari and Chef de Mission of the Assam contingent for the forthcoming National Games Raj Kakoti were also present in the function and they were felicitated during the occasion.
Apart from Director of Sports and Youth Welfare Department Nibedan Das Patowary, Assam Olympic Association (AOA) general secretary Lakhya Konwar, OIL DGM Debajyoti Basumatary, Kolkata Thunderbolts Chairman Pawan Kumar Patodia and ONGC PRO Bandana Das were present on the occasion as guests who gave away the awards.
