GUWAHATI: NEUFC held the national team to a 1-1 draw in a friendly tie held at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium here today.
The first goal of the match came from Sunil Chhetri who scored off a fast counter-attack in the 36th minute.
Just before half-time, NEUFC’s Ghanaian recruit Asomah Gyan found the equalizer.
In the second half, Indian coach Igor Stimac completely changed the playing eleven, and a more conservative game-play unfolded. Near the 70th minute, Subhashish Bose found the net with a header but the linesman had his flag up.
The match was held as part of the Indian team’s preparation for the forthcoming World Cup qualifier against Bangladesh. India will face Bangladesh in Kolkata on October 15.
Stimac had summoned 29 players initially for the preparatory camp which is now in progress in Guwahati. However, Jerry Lalrinzuala wasn’t able to join the camp owing to some fitness issues.
India has already played two games in the World Cup qualifying round. In the first game in Guwahati, they lost to Oman 1-2, while in the second game at Doha, India held Qatar 0-0.
