GUWAHATI: Former international footballer Renedy Singh has termed Sourav Ganguly’s elevation as the president of the BCCI as a good sign for cricket in India. He feels that when a former sportsperson holds the top post of an organization it helps flourish the game.
Renedy was in Guwahati to participate in a function organized to launch the North East Super 6 soccer. Talking to newspersons on the sideline of the function, the former midfielder said: “Saurav’s presence as the president of the BCCI will help the game develop further. A player knows very well what a team needs to perform consistently at higher levels, and from this point of view, I feel Saurav for the post is the right choice. Players will benefit from this decision.”
When asked whether he wants to see similar things to happen in the AIFF, the former international player who played 72 matches for India, said, “Yes. Why not? But right now it’s not possible. It would take some time.”
Commenting on Vinit Rai, the footballer from Assam who is now a regular member of the Indian team, Renedy said: “The footballer has proved that he has quality. Now he needs to deliver whenever there’s an opportunity.”
Renedy Singh also praised another Assam player Halicharan Narzary. “Narzary is also a good player. He is around the Indian team for a long period. My advice to both of them is to avail the opportunities in the best possible way.”
