GUWAHATI: He is now the highest wicket-taking bowler from Assam in first-class cricket. Arup Das, the right-arm medium pacer, shared his journey in an interaction with The Sentinel. Here is the excerpt.

The Sentinel(TS): You are now the highest wicket-taker from Assam in first-class cricket. How do you feel?

It’s a nice feeling. I have broken the record of Arlen Konwar. Actually I was in the team when Arlen became the highest wicket-taker and it was in my mind from that time. Finally, I reached the goal this season.

(TS): Whom do you like to give credit of your success?

Arup: First I would like to give credit to Barpeta District Association and Assam Cricket Association as it is because of them I got the opportunity to play cricket. I also want to take the name of my coach Zaved Khan who helped me a lot to become a pace bowler.

(TS): What was your planning at the initial stage of your career?

Arup: Actually in the early stage I didn’t take the game seriously. I played cricket just for time pass and fun. But once I included in the state U-19 team and collected around 90 wickets in my first two seasons I started to take the game seriously and my journey began.

(TS): You got the opportunity to play with a couple of good pacers from Assam like Abu Nechim Ahmed and Krishna Das. Share your experience?

Arup: Both are good pacers. Krishna and I played many matches and the understanding between us was very good. It was same with Abu too and both of us have many nice memories.

(TS): How do you see the future of pace bowling in Assam?

Arup: I should say it is very encouraging. Mukhtar Hussain and Mrinmoy Dutta are doing very well. I have learnt that another young pacer Dasarath Kumar, whom I have not seen yet, is performing with the ball very well. So I am very optimistic.

(TS): Any future plan !

Arup: Want to take 300 plus first class wickets before I hang up the boot.
