7.6 kg organic cabbage grown in Poumai Naga village, picture goes viral

Senapati: If you are very active on social media, you have probably come across a picture of cherubic Northeast Indian children holding a large cabbage aloft, their faces lit up with smiles.

Where was this picture clicked?

According to our sources, the viral picture was clicked in the remote Liyai Chilao Village in the Senapati district of Manipur. Liyai Khunou (Chilao) is a Poumai Naga Village in the hills district of Senapati, Manipur bordering Nagaland's Phek District. A peaceful and beautiful village, Zhaimai village (officially known as Liyai) is considered the biggest village amongst the Poumai Naga villages of Manipur. The picture was clicked by a certain R K Paul Chawang.

Grown by local farmers, the cabbage in the picture weighs a whopping 7.5 kilos. Cabbage weights generally range from 500 to 1,000 grams (1 to 2 lb). What makes the gigantic cabbage even more special is that it was reportedly grown by using traditional methods. At a time when naturally grown green and leafy vegetables have become an oddity, this picture.

The picture was posted on the popular Facebook page 'Naga Hills' where it has accrued over 65,000 likes and 1,000 shares. As expected, netizens have expressed their awe at this giant cabbage. Many social media users hailed the organic farming practices in the Northeast Indian region.

Reacting to the picture, Ramesh Nambiar, a Facebook user, wrote, "I think a Northeast Ministry for organic vegetables/fruits/bamboo etc has to be set up and marketed professionally to the international market. Farmer to the customer without middlemen."

Meanwhile, netizens have also showered their love on the smiling kids, with many marveling at how happy they seem.

"More than the record-breaking cabbage, the smiles lit on the faces of the four little darlings is heartwarming," wrote user GK Srinivas.

Meanwhile, some users said that this is an example of the "self-reliance" policy that is being preached by the Central Government to get the nation back on its feet in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis.
