Eviction drive leads to conflicts between officials and public in Moreh locality

MOREH: The restart of eviction drive at Integrated Check Post (ICP) bypass road at Moreh in Manipur led to a conflict between the locals and security forces. The eviction process started around 1:30 pm on Thursday.

Following an order from the Deputy Commissioner of Tengnoupal district, a team headed by Th Vikramjit, the Superintendent of Police, Tengnoupal and Sangboi Gangte, the ADC of Moreh along with the staff of Settlement Department took up the eviction process .

However, the locals opposed the team and claimed that they are the owners of the land. They tried to stop the eviction process, saying that they have not received any compensation yet. As a mark of protest, the protesters pelted stones at the officials and stripped their clothes.

To control the situation, the police fired tear gas shells and mock bombs that injured both the parties. After the protestors dispersed, the officials started to dismantle the illegal structures at ICP bypass road.

One of the members of the ICP Bypass Road Structures Committee said that the government started the eviction drive without fulfilling the demands of the affected owners of the land.

The affected households in this drive have not yet received any form of compensation from the government yet. The Tengnoupal DC convened a meeting on November 11 at the ADC Complex here to verify the documents, and find any lapses in the payment of compensation. (Agencies)
