IMPHAL : An awful incident came into light from Manipur's Loktak lake on Sunday. A group of poachers have allegedly killed a female hog deer, which is locally known as kharsha.
The hunters gathered the venison off the bones, head and skin and vanished away from the place. High officials of the Manipur government initiated a search operation based on prior information received regarding the matter.
The special drive was launched on Sunday around the Jawa Lamjao, situated in the northern part of Loktak. The operation was conducted by Bishnupur district Wildlife Warden, Sovam Ratan Singh under the guidance of Rebika Soibam Chanu, the divisional officer of Bishnupur District Forest Department.
The search operation began from 6 am in the morning and continued till 4 pm. Eight lassoes used to catch the deer were found during the search. Chanu informed that, in past six months, a total of 75 lassoes has been recovered from the area including these eight lassoes.
She further stated the hunter usually use the traditional weapons to kill the wild animals inside the Loktak. Local people working in the vegetable fields in Jawa Lamjao informed the officer that few merciless hunters trapped the deer and killed it.
They further requested the department to restrict trespassing in the Keibul Lamjao national park if there is a probable chance of poaching activities further. The poachers left behind the bones, heads and four legs of the deer after taking its meat. Several poaching activities take place every month in different parts of northeast.
In Assam, around 191 rhinos were hunted between the year 2000 and 2021. Poaching is one of the major environmental issues in India. Several cases has been registered from the Kaziranga National Park, Manas National Park and few other grasslands of Assam.
