IMPHAL: With the Indian Army Engineering Regiment putting all the efforts in rebuilding of the suspension bridge, reconstruction of the Irang Bridge is nearing completion. This bridge — which is the second lifeline of Manipur — is a vital communication link along the National Highway-37. Movement of vehicle along this route was stopped on November 1, 2020 after the bailey bridge over Irang River (Irang Bridge) collapsed when a fully-loaded truck carrying sand fell into it, killing the driver.

Unable to repair the collapsed bridge despite best efforts, a new Bailey bridge was installed. However, the newly installed bridge also collapsed before completion.

The work for installation of the new Bailey bridge was handled by a team of 52 Engineer Regiment of the Indian Army and National Highway Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL). The team is putting in all efforts to restore the Bailey bridge at the earliest.

As of now, NH-37A (Old Cachar Road or Tongjei Maril) is being used as a diversion route. (Agencies)
