IMPHAL: A labourer from Jharkhand was killed and two others injured in an attack by unidentified assailants in Manipur's Imphal West district, police said on Sunday. The incident occurred in the Naoremthong area on Saturday night.

A police official said that the assailants pulled out the three labourers of a construction company from their rented accommodation and shot them on the spot. One of them, identified as Shree Ram Hangsada, 41, subsequently succumbed to his injuries. The injured, also for Jharkhand, are undergoing treatment at the Regional Institute of Medical Science and Hospital in Imphal. Police launched a search operation to identify and apprehend the perpetrators while also seeking to ascertain the reason behind the shooting.

Earlier on September 13, at least three tribals were shot dead by unidentified militants in Manipur’s Kangpopki district. Officials reported this. A group of armed extremists stormed villages between Ireng and Karam areas. Situated along border regions of Imphal West and Kangpopki districts. The attack occurred early in morning with the militants arriving in vehicle and leaving before security forces could respond.

This violent incident follows recent clashes on September 8 and 9 in Pallel Tengnoupal district. Three people were killed in crossfire between militants and security forces.

Various tribal organizations, including Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF) and Kangpokpi-based Committee on Tribal Unity (COTU) have condemned killings. Senior ITLF leader and spokesperson Ginza Vualzong highlighted involvement of well-trained and armed terrorist groups emphasizing that this escalation adds new dimension to ethnic conflict and poses significant obstacle to achieving peace in state.

Vualzong noted that officials have been warning for weeks about resurgence of banned valley-based groups such as United National Liberation Front (UNLF) and People's Liberation Army (PLA). They also mentioned the reappearance of Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL) and People's Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK).
