Manipur: Anti-Extortion Operation Leads to UNLF Member Arrests in Imphal West District

IMPHAL: In a recent operation conducted in Imphal West District, three active members of the banned United National Liberation Front (UNLF) were apprehended. These individuals were allegedly engaged in ruthless extortion activities, creating a significant threat to the region's security. The operation, which unfolded over the past 24 hours, not only led to their arrests but also yielded the seizure of vital evidence.

Among the items recovered from the apprehended UNLF members were a pistol loaded with a magazine containing eight rounds, seven mobile phones, and an unregistered white gypsy. The successful operation, as detailed in a police report released on Thursday, signifies a major achievement in the ongoing efforts to curtail the unlawful activities of such insurgent groups.

Following the arrests, the detainees and the seized items were promptly handed over to the relevant police station for further investigation and legal proceedings. This demonstrates a commitment to ensuring that justice is served in cases involving extremist organizations like UNLF.

Furthermore, the authorities did not stop at the initial arrests. Subsequent actions included extensive search operations conducted jointly by security forces and Manipur police. These operations were carried out in areas on the fringes and deemed vulnerable in Kakching, Bishnupur, Churachandpur, and Thoubal districts. In Kakching District, two firearms and an Indian-made hand grenade were successfully recovered during these operations. This continued action reflects the government's determination to dismantle illegal networks and enhance overall security in the region.

In the context of maintaining essential services and facilitating the movement of goods, particular attention was paid to transportation. The report highlights that the movement of 343 vehicles along National Highway-37 and 195 vehicles along National Highway-2, all carrying essential items, was carefully ensured. This critical step guarantees that the everyday needs of the population are met without disruption.

Simultaneously, stringent security measures were put in place across areas vulnerable to security threats. A security convoy was deployed in sensitive stretches to ensure the safe and unhindered movement of vehicles, a crucial component of maintaining normalcy in the region.

A network of 132 nakas (checkpoints) was established in different districts of Manipur, encompassing both hill and valley areas. As a result of these efforts, a total of 1641 individuals were detained by the police in connection with various violations across the state. This demonstrates the comprehensive approach taken by the authorities to enforce law and order and safeguard the interests of the people.

The recent operation that led to the arrest of UNLF members in Imphal West District is a significant breakthrough in the ongoing battle against extremist elements. The recovery of weapons and the subsequent search operations in other vulnerable areas reinforce the commitment of the authorities to ensure the safety and security of Manipur's residents. Moreover, the measures taken to maintain the flow of essential goods and the deployment of additional security measures signify a holistic approach to the region's security and well-being.
