Imphal: The government of Manipur has decided to make the use of the 'Biometric Attendance System (BAS)' compulsory across all government offices from June 1 so as to ensure punctuality and accountability of government employees.

This move comes in the wake of the state government's decision to implement a 5-day work week (Monday-Friday) for all government offices, agencies, bodies, and public sector undertakings with effect from April 1, 2022.

As per a statement issued by the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms, appropriate modifications to the system will be put in place for officials working on a roster system, special duty or other such jobs.

It is worth noting that the use of BAS has been forbidden across all government offices of Manipur since March 2020 as a precautionary measure against the COVID-19 outbreak in the northeastern state.

Earlier, in view of the threat of novel coronavirus (COVID – 19) in the country and also to ensure that all possible preventive measures have been taken to stop the virus from spreading, all offices and institutions (both public and private), PSUs, commercial organizations across Assam had been directed to stop the use of the 'Biometric Attendance System' where physical contact is required with the system to record attendance.

However, any other biometric attendance system where physical contact is not required (like face recognition etc.) was allowed to be used as earlier.

The attendance may be marked manually in the official registers and appropriately maintained by the respective Head of Office.
