GUWAHATI: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in an election rally in Manipur mocked his ally, NPP, on Monday.

Speaking at the rally in Moirang, the chief minister stated the NPP will not be a part of the future Manipur administration.

NPP which was is part of the N. Biren Singh- led BJP government has opted to run alone in the forthcoming assembly election.

"NPP will not be a part of the next government in Manipur. BJP on its own will form the new government," said Assam CM and NEDA convenor Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma went on to say that the NPP led by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has "no value."

"Forget NPP, such parties have no value. Nobody in this world knows that such a party exists," CM Sarma said.

He added: "The NPP MLAs became ministers in Manipur government at the mercy of the BJP. The NPP had nothing to show on their own."

Mairembam Prithviraj Singh of the BJP is in a three-way race with Pukhrem Sharatchandra Singh of the Congress and Thongam Shanti Singh of the National People's Party.

He added that the BJP has its own administrations in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Tripura and that it will hold power in Manipur for a second term, slamming Congress for its policies and underlining its nonexistence in the whole northeast area.

Since 2017, the NPP, the major party in the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance administration, has been an ally of the BJP in both Meghalaya and Manipur, however, both parties will be fighting for the 2022 Assembly elections.

Notably, the NPP which won four seats in the 2017 Manipur Assembly Elections, the National People's Party has chosen to field more than 40 candidates this time.

In reality, the BJP-NPP verbal battle has intensified in recent days over pre-election violence in the state. The NPP claims that its opponents are using illegal means to intimidate its candidates.
