MANIPUR: The Loktak Lake Fishers Union is stepping up its endeavors to preserve migratory birds and the fragile biodiversity of the region. The All Loktak Lake Area Fishers Union, Manipur (ALLAFUM), is steadfastly working towards protecting the fragile ecosystem of Manipur's Loktak Lake and preserving wintering migratory birds. They have intensified their appeal to prohibit any undertaking that may undermine the conservation measures in place for this area.
Oinam Rajen Singh, the Secretary of ALLAFUM, brought attention to the harmful actions carried out by nearby fishermen who use LED lights for illegal night fishing in crucial parts of the lake. He reiterated that his union continues to request a ban on this method near the immediate vicinity of the lake.
Singh highlighted a range of worrying issues during discussions with the media, such as migratory fish being blocked from passing through the Ithai Barrage and overfishing methods contributing to a sharp reduction in Loktak Lake's fish numbers. Singh expressed serious concern regarding how this dwindling population is affecting local fishermen's livelihoods. He also criticized new practices like night fishing with LED lights that only exacerbate the problem further.
According to Singh, this behavior not only worsens the problem of overfishing but also disturbs the vital feeding areas that are necessary for migratory water birds during their wintering season from October through February every year.
Local fishermen have implemented the use of LED devices to lure fish, but this technique has come under scrutiny from authorities due to its disruption of traditional fishing methods which has turned Loktak Lake into an illuminated attraction at night. Singh warned about the harmful consequences that arise from using brightly lit LEDs during nighttime fishing and stressed how essential it is to put a stop to this practice in order safeguard migratory birds and mitigate any detrimental impacts on fisheries.
Amidst the excitement for transformation, the union's secretary restated appeals to implement a fishing moratorium from January until February in order to safeguard fingerlings during their breeding season. Encouraging the adoption of sustainable fishing methods, Singh urged fishermen not to employ dense nets and battery-powered dynamo devices that recklessly harm marine creatures such as fish, amphibians, insects, and plankton.
The fishing community of Champu Khangpok floating island village, located at the center of Loktak Lake, is committed to preserving its resources that are essential for their survival. They have taken responsibility for lake preservation and remain dedicated towards it. Singh requested the Loktak Development Authority to work closely with the Loktak Fishermen and take an active approach in creating successful conservation plans. This is crucial for safeguarding biodiversity, preventing future ecological damages, and securing the lake's sustainable growth.
