IMPHAL: Amidst the upheaval in Manipur, 29 medical students from the Kuki-Zo community, displaced by the crisis, expressed their discontent through a protest rally. On a Sunday, 27 MBBS students and two BDS participants marched from Tuibong Bazar to the Mini Secretariat, denouncing what they claim to be the denial of BDS and MBBS phase 1 University Examination.
Upon reaching the Mini Secretariat, the students faced a roadblock as authorities initially denied them entry. However, a partial concession allowed some of them to submit a memorandum addressed to the Governor of Manipur, Anusuiya Uikey, and Manipur University authorities, facilitated by Thangboi Gangte, the additional DC of Churachandpur district.
One of the students, Florence Nengneivah Baite, lamented the irony of their situation. Clad in their white medical uniforms, a symbol of their commitment to helping and treating people, they found themselves compelled to protest instead. She emphasized the perceived discrimination they faced, highlighting earlier verbal assurances from the Chief Secretary of Manipur and the DC of Churachandpur regarding the conduct of their examinations.
It's worth noting that the National Medical Commission reportedly did not raise any objections to the students taking their examinations in Churachandpur. Despite this, the students found themselves caught in bureaucratic red tape, prompting their rally for justice.
The North East Student Organisation (NESO) leaders, including Ejan Lotha, NESO coordinator Medovi, president NSF, and secretary finance NSF Heiko Kent, visited the protesting students at the Mini Secretariat. Ejan Lotha assured the students that NESO would take their concerns seriously and work towards resolving their grievances.
The incident underscores the challenges faced by these aspiring medical professionals who, despite their dedication to serving the community, are embroiled in administrative hurdles. As the NESO steps in to advocate for their cause, the medical students' struggle for fairness and the right to education in the midst of a crisis remains a poignant narrative in Manipur.
