Manipur: Medical Students Worst-Affected in Violence, Says Chief Secretary

IMPHAL: In a concerning update on the ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur, Chief Secretary Dr. Vineet Joshi revealed that medical students hailing from the hill districts of the state are facing the brunt of the turmoil. This revelation came during a comprehensive briefing to Governor Anusuiya Uikey on the state's current situation, which took place on Tuesday, October 10.

The Manipur Chief Secretary also took the opportunity to apprise the Governor of various initiatives and programs undertaken by the state government to provide relief and rehabilitation to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). Furthermore, he shared details about the measures aimed at restoring peace and normalcy in the strife-torn regions.

When questioned by the Manipur Governor regarding the state of education in the affected areas, Chief Secretary Joshi reported that almost all schools had reopened, with only a few exceptions where they are currently being used as relief camps. Remarkably, student attendance has increased by 10 percent since the resumption of classes.

For schools that remain closed in the hill districts of Manipur, an alternative mode of learning is set to be implemented shortly. Chief Secretary Joshi also highlighted the severe disruption faced by medical students from these hill districts, who were previously studying at JNIMS, RIMS, and Shija. He mentioned that discussions are ongoing with officials from the Union Health Ministry to resume normal classes for these affected students.

In addition to educational concerns, the Chief Secretary shed light on several initiatives aimed at improving the lives of those affected by the violence. He announced the introduction of helicopter services from Churachandpur in Manipur to Aizwal in Mizoram and Kangpokpi to Dimapur in Nagaland. Furthermore, he provided an update on the progress of pre-fabricated houses being constructed in Churachandpur and Kangpokpi districts.

Governor Anusuiya Uikey, in response, urged for the swift completion of these pre-fabricated houses to alleviate some of the challenges faced by IDPs residing in relief camps.

Addressing the availability of essential commodities in the affected regions, Chief Secretary Joshi assured that the state machinery and security forces were working tirelessly to ensure the unimpeded transportation of essential goods, particularly in the violence-hit districts.

The meeting also touched upon issues concerning the dignified disposal of deceased individuals and the distribution of ex gratia to affected families. The Manipur government continues to make every effort to manage and address the many challenges arising from the ongoing ethnic violence in the state.
