Manipur: NIA Posts ‘Wanted’ Notice For 8 Killers Of Athuan Abonmai

NIA has named Khamkhuanang, Athuana Pamei, Withonbou, Chunkimlung Thaimei, Keiduampou Panmei, Pousabou alias Jackson, NK Widingambou and Achuna Panmei, all from Tamenglong district, to be the offenders who committed the offense.

IMPHAL: The Imphal branch of National Investigation Agency (NIA), Manipur declared eight persons as ‘wanted’ in connection with the abduction and killing of Naga leader Athuan Abonmai. Each of the eight wanted persons carries a cash reward of Rs two lakhs on their head.

The bullet-riddled body of Athuan Abonmai, advisor and former president of Zeliangrong Baudi (Assam, Manipur, and Nagaland) was found in Pallong village under Tamei police station in the Tamei sub-division of Manipur’s Tamenglong district, which borders Nagaland and Assam on the northwest.

The proclamation order, including the photographs of the wanted criminals carrying cash rewards of Rs two lakh each, was issued by a special court of NIA.

The names and photographs of the wanted persons were put on display on the wall of the Cheirap Court, Imphal on Monday for information leading to their capture.

NIA has named Khamkhuanang, Athuana Pamei, Withonbou, Chunkimlung Thaimei, Keiduampou Panmei, Pousabou alias Jackson, NK Widingambou and Achuna Panmei, all from Tamenglong district, to be the offenders who committed the offense.

The eight accused are punishable under sections 302/ 307/ 365/ 400 and 34 IPC and section 16/17/ 20 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

A few days after the abduction and killing of Athuan Abonmai, Ministry of Home Affairs instructed the NIA to take charge of the investigation into the abduction of Athuan Abonmai from Polo Ground, Tamen-long and his subsequent killing by suspected NSCN-IM cadres on September 22, 2021 .

In compliance with the Ministry of Home Affairs' instruction, the NIA Imphal Branch re-registered an FIR from Lamphel police station and launched an investigation.

It should be noted that, Athuan Abonmai, advisor and former president of Zeliangrong Baudi left his Tarung village residence on September 22, 2021 morning to participate in a community outreach programme of Manipur at Polo Ground, Tamenglong, an event which also attended by Chief Minister N Biren Singh.

He was abducted on the same day while attending the “Go to Hills 2.0.”, by around 20 suspected cadres of the NSCN (IM) from Tamenglong Headquarters,

His son, Aran Abonmai registered a case at Lamphel police station, Imphal West soon after his kidnapping.
