IMPHAL : A 37 year old Village Defence Force (VDF) Personnel, Ningombam Premananda went missing on 31st of January, while he was on duty. Unfortunately, on 3rd February, Friday, a team of police found him dead at M Lebanon Village located in Chandel district.
Permananda was assigned duty in Phaisi village under Chakpikarong Police Station located in Chandel district. He was on duty to destruct illicit poppy cultivation in the region.
As soon as the department was informed about the matter, a firm team was formed to search for Premananda. As many as 130 police personnel headed by additional Superintendent of police under Thoubal district, Wangkhomba Okramcha along with additional SP Chandel Amarjit, initiated the search.
The search operation team found and recovered Premananda's body at around 6pm in the evening. As per the sources, the body will be sent for an autopsy after the arrival of forensic department officials.
Premananda was the father of two children, and was the son of N Dina. The deceased was a resident of Thoubal region.
Manipur CM N Biren Singh while addressing the Assembly Session on 3rd February, mentioned about missing Premananda and that the department is intensely searching for the VDF personnel.
Notably, ever since the on duty personnel went missing, the department restricted movement along the national highway 102. However, the restriction was withdrawn as separate operation was led out by combining forces.
On 20th of January, 80 thousand Opium Poppy plants were destroyed in a joint operation conducted by Assam Rifles, Manipur Police and Manipur's forest department. They were planted in 1.25 acres of forest land at Longpi village hill range in Noney district of the state.
The task was initiated based on a prior information about a huge plantation of poppy plants in the area. According to a statement, the poppy plants is approximately worth Rs 12 lakh. The operation carried out by the team was a part of anti drug move.
The statement specified the Srikona Battalion of Headquarter 21 Sector Assam Rifles under the supervision of Headquarter Inspector General Assam Rifles (east) destructed the huge amount of illegal poppy cultivation.
