IMPHAL: In a recent crackdown on criminal activities, Manipur Police successfully apprehended two suspected members of the United National Liberation Front (UNLF), a proscribed separatist insurgent group operating in the northeastern state of Manipur, India. This operation also led to the recovery of firearms and ammunition, shedding light on their involvement in extortion from the public.
The police operation, executed on Wednesday night, targeted two separate hideouts in Imphal, the capital city of Manipur, specifically in the Imphal East and Imphal West districts. Acting on valuable intelligence inputs, the Manipur Police's commandos simultaneously raided the locations in a coordinated effort.
The suspects, believed to be associated with UNLF, were apprehended from these hideouts. One of the arrested individuals was found in Elangbam Leikai, Imphal West District, while the other was detained in Singjamei Wangma Bamol Leikai, Imphal East. The police, in their official statement on Thursday, emphasized that these suspects were involved in the alleged extortion of substantial sums of money from the local population.
During the operation, law enforcement authorities seized a significant cache of items from the arrested individuals. Among the confiscated items were a 9mm pistol, 143 rounds of ammunition, and three mobile handsets equipped with four SIM cards. These findings suggest that the individuals were not only linked to extortion but were also in possession of weapons and communication devices that could potentially aid their illegal activities.
Following their arrest, the suspects were promptly handed over to the respective police stations for further legal action and investigation, ensuring that they are held accountable for their alleged involvement in criminal activities.
The UNLF, officially known as the United National Liberation Front of Manipur, is a separatist insurgent group with a long history of activity in the state of Manipur. The group's primary objective is the establishment of a sovereign and socialist Manipur, separate from the Indian union. Their activities, often marked by violence and illegal extortion, have posed a significant challenge to the region's security and stability.
The Manipur Police's recent operation resulted in the arrest of two suspected UNLF members and the confiscation of weapons and ammunition. This action underscores the authorities' commitment to combat extortion activities and maintain law and order in the region, while also highlighting the ongoing challenges posed by separatist insurgent groups like UNLF in Manipur.
