IMPHAL: In a significant operation, the Manipur Police's elite commando unit apprehended a member of the banned People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (Progressive), PREPAK-Pro, as he attempted to collect extortion money from local businessmen at the Super Market in Lamphel, Imphal West district. The detained individual has been identified as Shyam Huidrom Singh, known by the alias Johny. The raid resulted in the confiscation of a 9mm pistol with a magazine, two mobile handsets, Rs 5,000 in extortion money, several incriminating documents, and a Honda Activa scooter that were in his possession.
This operation unfolded following specific intelligence reports indicating that militants from a valley-based underground group were targeting local entrepreneurs with extortion demands. Acting swiftly on this information, the commandos of the Imphal West district police launched an unannounced raid at the Lamphel supermarket around 11 am on a Saturday, successfully capturing Shyam Huidrom Singh, who was revealed to be an active member of PREPAK (Pro).
Following the arrest, both Shyam Huidrom Singh and the recovered items were promptly handed over to the Lamphel Police Station. This transfer ensures that the necessary legal proceedings can now be initiated to address the involvement of the accused in the extortion activities and related offenses.
