Imphal: Supporting the Manipur government's 'war on drugs' initiative, the Poumi Naga tribe has Poumi areas in the state declared 'drug-free zone'.
According to reports, a resolution to this effect and aginst poppy plantation was made on April 28 during the Poumai general body meeting.
Notably, with this decision of theirs, this is the first such case where the whole community has extended their support to fight against the menace of drugs in the state.
On Saturday, a delegation of the Poumai tribe led by Karong AC MLA J Kumo Sha, representing Karong seat in Senapati and leaders of various civil bodies of the community met chief minister N Biren Singh and submitted a resolution of the tribe declaring Poumai areas as 'drug-free' zones.
Poumai Naga Union president D Dailord Pao, Poumai Naga Women's Union president P Delilah Pao and other CSO leaders were among the Paomi leaders in the delegation.
Meanwhile, Manipur CM appreciated the Pumao tribes for the resolution and declaration and further commended saying it is quite encouraging as well as supportive of the government's war against drugs.
"It is indeed a historic moment," the CM said.
He further said that there have been instances of villages coming out in support of the war on drugs, but it is the first time that such a large community or tribe has come out and declared such support for the war on drugs.
