IMPHAL: In an all-party meeting scheduled for Saturday (June 24), the imposition of President's Rule in Manipur is reportedly not being considered, according to reliable sources. The meeting, organized by the Union Home Ministry, aims to address the volatile situation in the violence-stricken northeastern state. Union Home Minister Amit Shah will preside over the meeting, which will take place at the Parliament complex in New Delhi.
The decision to exclude discussions on President's Rule from the agenda followed a comprehensive briefing on the situation in Manipur by Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister of Assam and convenor of the Northeast Democratic Alliance (NEDA). Sarma had met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah on June 21 in the capital city.
Earlier this month, Sarma had visited Manipur and held meetings with Chief Minister N Biren Singh to discuss the state's situation. He also engaged with representatives from various Meitei organizations in Imphal. Furthermore, Sarma met with leaders of Kuki rebel groups operating under suspension of operations (SoO) in Guwahati.
Numerous opposition political parties, civil society organizations, and tribal bodies have called for the immediate imposition of President's Rule in Manipur, given the ongoing turmoil. Since May 3, the state has experienced clashes between two communities, resulting in significant violence, more than 100 casualties, and the displacement of thousands of individuals.
Critics have raised allegations that the timing of the all-party meeting was deliberately chosen to coincide with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's absence from the country, allowing him to avoid attending or making any official statements on the violence in Manipur. Despite the escalating crisis in the state, Prime Minister Modi has maintained a stoic silence on the matter, even opting to travel to the United States instead of visiting Manipur or addressing the situation.
The all-party meeting chaired by Home Minister Amit Shah aims to provide a platform for various political parties to discuss and deliberate on the issues plaguing Manipur. While the imposition of President's Rule does not appear to be under consideration at present, the meeting is expected to address measures to restore peace and stability in the state.
