IMPHAL: A special court in Guwahati, Assam, has granted the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) a five-day custody of four accused arrested in connection with the alleged killing of two Meitei students.

CBI had registered two said cases on 23.08.2023 on the request of the Manipur Government and taken over the investigation of these cases earlier registered by State Police on the complaints of parents of minor victims vide FIR No. 584 (7) 2023 dated 08.07.2023 at Police Station Imphal and FIR No. 1009 (7) 2023 dated 19.07.2023 at Police Station Lamphel.

The four accused, including two women, were arrested by the CBI on October 1. They were produced before the Competent Court at Guwahati (designated as per the orders of the Hon’ble Supreme Court) on Monday, October 2, and have been identified as Paominlun Haokip, Smalsawm Haokip, Lhingneichong Baitekuki, and Tinneilhing Henthang.

Meanwhile, two minor children, who accompanied the said arrested accused during transit from Imphal (Manipur) to Guwahati (Assam), have been handed over to District Child Protection Officer, Kamrup Metro District for their welfare, protection and care.

The two Meitei students, Phijam Hemjit (20) and Hijam Linthoingambi (17), went missing on July 6. Photos of their bodies were widely shared on social media in September.

The killing of the two Meitei students has sparked outrage in Manipur, with many people accusing the state government of failing to protect its citizens. The government has denied these allegations, but the protests have continued.

The Manipur police and other security forces in the state have been accused of "high-handedness" and "use of excess force" against the student protestors. Over 50 students sustained serious injuries due to the "high-handedness" of security forces in Manipur. The CBI has been tasked with investigating the killings, and the arrest of the four accused is a significant development in the case. It is hoped that the CBI will be able to bring the perpetrators to justice and provide closure to the families of the victims.
