Manipur Violence: ‘Dropbox’ For Returning Snatched Weapons Installed By MLA

IMPHAL: In a bid to facilitate the return of weapons snatched by miscreants, a BJP MLA from Manipur has thought up an innovative idea in this regard.

Manipur BJP MLA L Susindro Meitei, representing the Khurai constituency, has installed a ‘dropbox’ for return of snatched weapons within the premises of his residence.

On the cover of the ‘dropbox’ installed is written, “Please drop your snatched weapons here. Feel free to do so.”

BJP MLA Susindro Meitei has also assured that those who take the step of returning their snatched weapons by dropping them in the dropbox would remain anonymous.

Ever since violence broke out in the state at the start of last month, over 4000 arms and around five lakh rounds of ammunition have been looted by miscreants and rebels from armouries and outposts of different security forces deployed in Manipur.

It should be mentioned here that combing operations have been conducted by security forces across the state of Manipur to recover the looted weapons.

The combing operations conducted in different places of Manipur by the security forces have resulted in the recovery of nearly 1000 weapons during this period.

Meanwhile, a peace committee has been constituted by the central government with the aim of restoring peace and normalcy in the strife-torn state of Manipur in the Northeast.

The peace committee, which has been formed by the central government, is slated to be headed by Manipur governor Anusuiya Uikey.

The members in the peace committee also include Manipur CM N Biren Singh, state ministers, MPs, MLAs and leaders from the different political parties in the state.

It was also informed that former bureaucrats, academicians, intellectuals and social activists from Manipur will also be part of the peace committee.

The panel has been entrusted with the responsibility of holding discussions and talks with all stakeholders that have been involved in the conflict, including representatives of the concerned communities.

A statement to that intent by the ministry of home affairs (MHA) said, “The mandate of the committee will be to facilitate peace making process among various ethnic groups of the state, including peaceful dialogue and negotiations between conflicting parties/groups.”

“The committee should strengthen social cohesiveness, mutual understanding and facilitate cordial communication between various ethnic groups,” it added.

Manipur has been at the centre of a conflict, ever since clashes broke out between two communities in the state on May 3, and the subsequent large-scale violence that resulted in.

The clashes have claimed nearly 100 lives and thousands of people were displaced, seeking shelter in neighbouring states.
