IMPHAL: Amid continued violence, incidents of exchange of fire between armed miscreants and security forces were reported in two Manipur villages on Friday, according to officials with information about the matter.

The firing incidents were confirmed on the official Twitter handle of Indian Army’s Spear Corps division, with a post saying that there were reports of firing at security forces by armed miscreants in Urangpat and Kangpokpi villages. The miscreants were armed with automatic weapons, informed the tweet.

“Group of armed miscreants sneaked into the area from YKPI towards hill side today afternoon. Miscreants firing automatic weapons towards villages of Urangpat & Gwaltabi. Security Forces Columns deployed in these vacant villages responding in calibrated manner to avoid any collateral damage. Large group of women part of mob in YKPI & Seijang area preventing movement of additional columns into the area”, the tweet said.

Officials in the loop about such developments in Manipur stated that on Thursday also, a group of women protesters in that part of the state had resorted to blocking a CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) team from going into the Manipur Police Training College in Pangei, Imphal East.

A CBI team has been deployed in the state to carry out an investigation into the case of miscreant groups looting weapons and ammunition from the weapon stockades or armouries of different police stations and security camps in Manipur.

Over 4,000 FIRs have been registered by the state police, out of which six complaints are being probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), with the help of a special investigation team (SIT) formed for the purpose.

The violence in Manipur has claimed at least 115 lives so far, since it started on May 3.

Although the Centre has sent units of Army, Assam Rifles, CRPF and BSF to restore peace and normalcy in the strife- torn state, incidents of violence is being reported on almost a daily basis.

Two Assam Rifles troops were injured on Thursday when they went to investigate after reports of miscreants firing at the villages came from a village in N Boljaing, Imphal West.

An IED blast, in which three people were injured, also occurred on Wednesday evening in Kwakta area of Bishnupur.

Meanwhile, Union home minister Amit Shah has summoned an all-party meeting on Saturday to discuss the prevailing situation in the trouble- torn state.
