Manipur Violence: Manipur Internet Ban Extended Till June 30

IMPHAL: The government of Manipur has announced an extension of the state's internet ban for an additional five days until June 30, in an effort to maintain public order and peace within the region. This decision comes after Union Home Minister Amit Shah presided over a meeting involving all political parties to address the current situation in Manipur.

According to officials, the Army opted not to endanger civilians and successfully resolved a standoff with a mob led by women. Security forces had cordoned off the Itham village in Imphal East where members of the KYKL militant group were hiding. The Army, after seizing weapons and ammunition, concluded the situation without any casualties.

During the all-party meeting on Saturday, Amit Shah informed the attendees that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had been closely monitoring the situation in Manipur, a state marked by conflict. Shah expressed optimism, stating that the condition in the northeastern state was gradually improving and that no fatalities had occurred since June 13 as a result of the violence.

However, the Congress party criticized the central government following the all-party meeting. Okram Ibobi Singh, a party leader and former Chief Minister of the state, claimed that Amit Shah was unwilling to listen to his suggestions. Singh argued that it was essential to restore normalcy in the state and cautioned against politicizing the issue.

Singh further stated, "When I started giving my suggestions, I think he did not want to listen. I also mentioned that this was not the time to politicize the issue as normalcy needs to be brought in the state. I asked him to give me at least 5 minutes to speak on the issue, but he asked me to meet him separately."

Rashtriya Janta Dal (RJD) MP Manoj Jha commented that the collective resistance indicated a lack of trust in the individual currently leading Manipur. Jha made this statement after Amit Shah convened a meeting with all political parties to discuss the ongoing unrest in the northeastern state. Although Jha did not explicitly name Chief Minister N Biren Singh, he suggested that peace could not be achieved in Manipur as long as the current leader remained in charge.

The government of Manipur has extended the internet ban in the state in order to maintain public order, while the Army resolved a standoff without casualties. The all-party meeting led by Union Home Minister Amit Shah received criticism from the Congress party, with Okram Ibobi Singh highlighting the need to restore normalcy and urging against politicizing the issue. Rashtriya Janta Dal MP Manoj Jha expressed a lack of confidence in the current leader of Manipur, indirectly referring to Chief Minister N Biren Singh.
