IMPHAL: After a minor lull in the violence reported from across the state, the security scenario in Manipur worsened on Thursday as violent incidents were reported from various parts of the state.

These incidents of violence broke out in several places of Manipur, just when situation in the state seemed to be slowly progressing back to normal.

On Thursday, protestors in large numbers took to the streets, mainly the highway, to block Imphal-bound trucks carrying essential goods in Kangpokpi district of Manipur.

The trucks, coming to Manipur from Dimapur in Nagaland with essential goods, were blocked by the protestors at the entrance to the state in Kangpokpi district in Manipur.

Burnt tyres and logs set on fire by protestors could be seen littered at nearly 10 locations along the national highway 2, to block the trucks in Kangpokpi district of Manipur.

There were reports of protestors also setting a car on fire.

In light of the blockade in place, the trucks headed back to Dimapur in Nagaland, to avoid anyone causing damage to goods they were carrying.

Meanwhile, an intense gunfight has been reported from Bishnupur district going on between security forces in Manipur and rebels of an underground outfit, till the afternoon on Thursday.

The gun-battle is reported to have broken out near Tronglaobi in Bishnupur district of Manipur on Thursday morning.

One Manipur police commando has reportedly been killed in the gunfight, while three others have sustained injury in the gunfight, although the number of casualties on the other side could not be gathered.

Earlier on Wednesday, injuries were sustained by Assam Rifles personnel, after a column of the paramilitary force was fired upon by miscreants in Manipur’s Imphal East district.

“After firing a few rounds, the miscreants ran away. One Assam Rifles personnel sustained gunshot wounds. He is currently under treatment,” the Army had informed.

On the other hand, the Congress has stated that the large-scale violence in the Northeast state of Manipur seems to be “pre-planned”.

Imposition of President’s rule in Manipur was also demanded by the Congress party, on the grounds that the BJP government has failed to control the situation.

Imposition of President’s rule in Manipur is a must to restore peace and normalcy in the violence-affected state, the Congress said.
