Manipur: Gyanendro Ningombam of Manipur has been elected as president of Hockey India. He is the first person from northeast India to be given the prestigious post. The General Secretary of Manipur Hockey, Seram Neken officially issued a release where he stated that Hockey India officially declared the election of Gyanendro Ningombam of Manipur as its president on Friday at the 10th Hockey India Congress and Election held in New Delhi. Gyanendro will serve as head of the national federation for two years.
Gyanendro has been serving as the officiating president of Hockey India since July 2020 following the resignation of Mohd Mushtaque Ahmad on July 2020. He has been associated with Hockey in Manipur for the last 40 years. He was earlier the senior vice-president of Hockey India, senior vice-president of Manipur Hockey and also chief executive officer of Manipur Hockey. He also served as the editor of Meeyam, an evening daily in Manipur.
Congratulations poured in from Manipur Hockey and various other quarters to Gyanendro on his election as the full-fledged president of Hockey India. Manipur Hockey is also organising a grand reception ceremony at the Imphal International Airport for Gyanendro's arrival on November 8.
The official release by General Secretary also appealed members of Manipur Hockey Executive Board, districts units, players and Hockey lovers to participate in the reception with strict compliance of COVID-19 SOPs laid down by the government.
