Guwahati: A day ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Manipur, the Coordination Committee (CorCom) has called for a total shutdown on February 22 to "boycott" Modi's visit to the state.

The shutdown will come into effect from 1 am on February 22, till the Prime Minister leaves the state.

However, as pr the official statement of CorCom, the Medical, fire services, and other emergency services will be exempted from the purview of the shutdown.

''The organization appealed to the people to support the boycott call by enforcing the total shutdown which will remain effective until the PM leaves the state,'' the statement added.

It further claimed that Modi's visit is part of an agenda to extend India's "colonial rule" over Manipur.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Manipur on February 22 to campaign for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidates for the upcoming 12th assembly polls in the state.

According to party leaders, during the visit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address an election rally at Luwangsangbam sports complex ground near Chief Minister N Biren Singh's residence in Imphal East district.

As per reports, the Union Minister For Road Transport And Highways Nitin Gadkari and Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal are also expected to arrive on Saturday to participate in the ongoing poll campaigns in different districts of the state.

Presently, Tripura Chief Minister Biplap Kumar Deb and Union Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani are already campaigning for the BJP candidates in Imphal West, Senapati and Jiribam districts.
