Security reinforced along India-Myanmar border in Manipur; situation being monitored: CM N Biren Singh

IMPHAL: Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Wednesday said that security has been reinforced along the India-Myanmar border in Manipur in view of the recent conflict between the rebel groups and the military junta in the bordering areas of Myanmar. “Due to the prevailing situation in Myanmar, we have reinforced security at the border and not only some riflemen, the state security forces including the Border Security Forces (BSF) and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) have also been deployed. Additionally we are monitoring the situation,” Singh said.

Earlier, following the recent fights between the rebel groups and the military junta in the bordering areas of Myanmar, India issued an updated travel advisory for Indian nationals.

In view of the evolving security situation in Myanmar, all Indian nationals are advised to avoid non-essential travel,” the Ministry of External Affairs said in a press release on Tuesday.

Those already living in Myanmar are advised to take precaution and avoid travel to the regions affected by violence. Inter-state travel by road should also be avoided,” the MEA release also said. A number of Myanmar nationals fled from their country following the recent airstrike by the Myanmar army in the bordering areas of the country. More than 26,000 from Myanmar’s Rakhine state have been displaced since Monday after fresh fighting between Myanmar Armed Forces (MAF) and the Arakan Army (AA) according to the United Nations. Meanwhile, around 5000 people from Myanmar have entered the Indian state of Mizoram following a fresh airstrike by the Myanmar army in the bordering areas along the Indo-Myanmar border. N Biren Singh also cited the current situation in Manipur and said that normalcy was slowly restoring in the conflict ridden state.

Singh also condemned the recent killing of an India Reserve Battalion (IRB) jawan and a driver in an ambush by suspected militants in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district. “Everywhere some miscreant elements exist so it is very unfortunate, but we have now provided security. Since the past almost 1-2 months, normalcy is restoring slowly except the recent killing of IRB jawan incident,” Singh said. “It is very shocking, I condemn this type of acts. We should not indulge in these type of crimes. We should now all try to together try to restore normalcy and peace in the state of Manipur. Peace has already been restored in several parts of Manipur,” he added. Police has started a mass combing operation since the past two days to nab the culprits and I hope the police will do their job and arrest the the accused, Singh said. (ANI)
