IMPHAL: Many students are feared to be dead in a road accident in the Noney district of Manipur on the morning of Wednesday, December 21.

The location is said to be on the Bisnupur-Khoupum (Old Cachar Road) and they were going towards Khoupum. The bus carrying the students went out of control while trying to negotiate a curve on the highway.

Local people rushed to the spot immediately and started the rescue measures. 20 students were shifted to the Raj Medicity Hospital of Imphal after first aid was administered at the District Hospital in Bisnupur. 5 students died on the spot 3 more in the Bishnupur District hospital taking the casualty to 8. Seven of them are girl students and one teacher.The details regarding the health condition of the remaining students and staff are not know as of now.

The bus carrying 36 people including students and teachers of Thambalnu Higher Secondary School was on its way to a tourism destination as a part of an educational trip. The accident took place when the group was just one kilometre from the destination. According to reports, the bus skidded off the national highway and dropped from a 300 ft steep cliff. The bus was completely damaged in the fall while killing several students and injuring several others.

Three more victims are on ventilator services while emergency medical procedures are underway for several others.

Chief Minister N Biren Singh also arrived at the hospital in Imphal and announced ex-gratia of Rs 500000 to the family of each of the people who died in this bus accident. Manipur Health Minister.
