IMPHAL: In a fresh wave of violence in Manipur, a northeastern state in India, a tragic incident unfolded in Kuki Thowai village, Ukhrul district. The conflict resulted in the untimely deaths of three individuals, their bodies discovered bearing gruesome injuries and signs of mutilation. The harrowing event was preceded by the sound of intense gunfire emanating from the village in the early hours of the day.
Local authorities reported that the victims, all young adults aged between 24 and 35, were found after an extensive police search spanning surrounding villages and forested areas. Shockingly, the bodies displayed marks consistent with sharp-edged weapons, and their limbs had been brutally severed.
This latest eruption of ethnic clashes began on May 3 in Manipur when a 'Tribal Solidarity March' was orchestrated in the hill districts. The purpose of the march was to protest the Meitei community's pursuit of Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. Meiteis constitute slightly over half of Manipur's population and primarily inhabit the Imphal Valley. In contrast, the tribal communities of Nagas and Kukis make up just over 40% of the population and are concentrated in the hill districts.
In response to the distressing situation, a four-member delegation led by Sitaram Yechury, the general secretary of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPIM), is set to visit Manipur. The visit is scheduled for a three-day duration, spanning from August 18 to August 20. The delegation aims to engage with the victims of the violence, expressing solidarity with the affected people and advocating for peace.
Departing from the New Delhi Airport, Yechury emphasized the CPIM's commitment to supporting the people of Manipur and its determination to restore tranquility. He conveyed that their purpose was to stand by the beleaguered Manipuri populace, highlighting India's united support during these trying times. Yechury also called for the removal of Manipur's Chief Minister, citing the need to bring the situation under control for the greater unity of the nation.
Characterizing the situation in Manipur as "dangerous," Yechury underscored the significance of managing the crisis to preserve the cohesion of the country. The tragic events in Kuki Thowai village serve as a poignant reminder of the fragility of social harmony, prompting collective efforts to restore peace and stability in the region.
