SHILLONG: Altogether 12 people lost their lives and a few others are missing in rain-related incidents including landslides across Meghalaya in the last four days. This was informed by Meghalaya Minister incharge of disaster management, Kyrmen Shylla.

Landslides triggered by incessant rains has caused havoc in the city with three lives lost on Friday morning. A massive landslide at Mynsain, near Laban here, swept away three houses burying five persons under the debris. There are similar apprehensions about three other missing persons. Meanwhile there are reports of another landslide that took the life of a 12-year-old girl at Madanriting. She was asleep in her house when the incident took place.

Referring to the huge landslide at Mynsain, city Superintendent of Police (SP) Vivek Syiem said that two bodies were recovered late Friday evening. They deceased have been identified as Razia Ahmed (38) and Bela Ahmed (40) while the other three missing persons are Feroza Khan (40), Imdad Nongrum (60) and Qayum uddin (35).

There are reports of multiple landslides in East Khasi Hills district in the past 24 hours. Besides the three rain-related deaths in Shillong, five more deaths have been reported from South West Khasi Hills in the past three days.

Meanwhile, the MET department has predicted heavy showers in the next 24 hours also.
