SHILLONG: The ABVP (Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad), affiliated to the Sanghpariwar, has moved the President of India to appoint a permanent Vice Chancellor (VC) for NEHU (North Eastern Hills University), stated a press release.
In a letter to the President of India, the State secretary of Meghalaya ABVP, KumariNibiang Sumer said, ''We wish to bring to your kind notice that the post of Vice Chancellor of NEHU has been lying vacant since September 23, 2020.
''NEHU was established on July 19, 1973 by an Act of the Indian Parliament. The University is in the suburbs of Shillong -- the State capital of Meghalaya. The University has two campuses: Shillong and Tura in Meghalaya. NEHU has 44 departments, 310 faculty members, eight deans and 5007 students. The Tura campus of NEHU functions under a pro-Vice Chancellor.
''The post of Vice Chancellor is of paramount importance in any university and he/she plays the role of a guardian in the university family. The VC is the torchbearer and is accountable for development and bringing a conducive academic atmosphere in the University.
''ABVP Meghalaya strongly feels that a University of such prominence needs a full time Vice Chancellor to steer and lead into a right direction. Absence of a full-time VC will deter the smooth functioning and growth of University.
''We deemed it fit to submit to your kind self that considering the urgency and need of a full-time VC, necessary action may be initiated from your end.
''We humbly submit to your kind self to exercise your power as the Visitor of this University and accelerate the process of appointment of VC. Your kind consideration and necessary action will be highly solicited.
''ABVP Meghalaya unit has always raised the issues of university such as examinations, admission and health of the students. And we will continue to do so for the larger interest of students community.''
