SHILLONG: With cases of the 'African Swine Fever' reported from across Meghalaya, the infected areas have been declared as 'Containment Zones'. Informing this to newsmen here on Thursday, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong pointed out that the African Swine Fever cases have been reported from isolated areas of four districts of the State.
"Of the 73 cases of swine deaths, while 24 have been tested for the African Swine Fever, samples of the other 49 are awaited," stated the Deputy Chief Minister. He added that the affected areas have been declared 'Containment Zones', where slaughtering of pigs and eating of pork are banned. Adding that inter-district movement of pigs is disallowed, he sought cooperation from the public to ensure that the swine flu does not turn out in an epidemic form.
Meghalaya is the third State in the region to have been inflected by the virus.
