SHILLONG: The three regional committees set up by the Meghalaya government to look into resolving the boundary disputes with Assam gave a presentation on their findings on Friday.
It may be mentioned that the government had set up the committees for West Khasi Hills district, Ri-Bhoi district and Janitia Hills districts.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said that the meeting was basically held to take forward the entire process of finding an amicable solution to the differences on boundary areas between Assam and Meghalaya.
"Once we have done our homework, we will be having two to three more sittings with the regional committees," added the Chief Minister.
According to Sangma, these regional committees will also have their own sittings and once after the session is over, then they may be joint meetings and joint visits being done by the regional committees. He also informed that when one goes into the details, there is no dispute in a large number of those areas.
"So we are hopeful that in 20 to 30 per cent of these villages, where we have been seeing are under dispute, we may find that actually, there is no dispute in those," said the Chief Minister.
Adding that there are also areas which have complications, the Chief Minister pointed ouit, ''One needs to do more homework in another category of areas which are very complicated. It would require a bit more discussion with the stakeholders.
"We don't want to club the entire thing into one problem. But, we will break it down to smaller problems and find solutions to each of them," stressed Chief Minister Conrad Sangma.
