SHILLONG: Meghalaya Governor Tathagata Roy on Tuesday appointed Baffindalyne Giri, retired District and Sessions Judge, as member of the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission. It may be mentioned that Giri who is the first lady judicial officer of the State had served as District and Sessions Judge till her retirement in 2017.

Giri passed her LLB in 1986 from Shillong Law College and also qualified for the Meghalaya Civil Service in the same year. She was subsequently appointed as Extra Assisitant Commissioner, Mairang Sub-Division, but did not join the service. Giri practiced as an advocate till 1994 and in 1995, she was appointed as Chief Judicial Magistrate, Shillong.

In September 2002, she was appointed as Adhoc Additional District and Sessions Judge Grade I Fast Track Court for East Khasi Hills, Ri-Bhoi and West Khas Hills districts and was invested with the powers of Additional Deputy Commissioner. In November, 2006, Giri was regularised as Additional District and Sessions Judge, Shillong.

In November, 2010 she was appointed District and Sessions Judge, Deputy Commissioner Judicial and as Special Judge, Shillong for, NDPS, Prevention of Corruption Act, Wakf Tribunal, Electricity Act, Labour Act, Industrial Disputes Act, Land Acquisition Case and Motor Accident Claims Tribunal. In June 2013 Giri was transferred to West Jaintia Hills district as judiciary stands separated, and also appointed as Special Judge, including POCSO Act.
