Shillong:

A lower court has granted anticipatory bail to National People's Party (NPP) MLA Thomas Sangma, who is accused of rape.

Sangma was given bail on the condition that he not go missing or leave the state without notice. He was also instructed to keep his distance from the victim.

An FIR was filed against the MLA earlier this week under IPC sections 376 for rape and 506 for criminal intimidation for allegedly raping the woman on many occasions.

"He has been raping me on the pretext of getting married from January 2020 till 17 April 2021," the victim stated.

According to the victim, she and a friend were invited to the Magnum hotel in Shillong early last year. Sangma offered them a drink, at which point she dropped unconscious.

"My friend and I drank the wine, and we spent some time in the hotel. After consuming the wine, I felt sleepy and became unconscious," she said.

Sangma raped the victim on that day, as per the victim. Because she was intimidated, she was unable to register an FIR. She further stated that Sangma had promised to marry her.

Sangma further stated that he will divorce his wife and marry her shortly.

"Therefore, with a genuine trust, I agreed to have an affair with him, but I never knew that he was blabbing only to satisfy his lustful desire and to have sex with me on the pretext of getting married," the victim said in her statement.

She further claimed that she became pregnant and that Sangma requested her to terminate the fetus.

Furthermore, the victim stated that she had been living with Sangma until April 17, then he abandoned her.
