SHILLONG: United Democratic Party (UDP) candidate for the October 21 Shella by-poll and son of late Dr Donkupar Roy, Balajiedkupar Synrem, filed his nomination papers here on Wednesday.

Synrem filed his nomination before the District Election Officer at Sohra, and was accompanied by UDP president Metbah Lyngdoh, along with a group of supporters.

Also present were his mother along with UDP MLAs Lahkmen Rymbui and Nujorki Sungoh, NPP MLA and Cabinet Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, UDP MDC Titos Chyne and party vice-president Allantry Dkhar. Speaking to media persons after filing his nomination, Synrem said that he is confident that he will win the by-election.

“The love of the people for my father has been there for the last 31 years and I firmly believe that the UDP will also work hard and the constituents will also ensure my win,” he said. Synrem also said that he will try to fulfill the dreams of his father (Dr Roy) especially to make Sohra a district. Presently, Sohra is a Civil Sub-Division.

On the issue of the NPP giving its support to the UDP for the by-poll, Synrem said that this shows that the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) coalition is strong and united.

It may be mentioned that on Tuesday night, the NPP had announced that it will not put up a candidate for the by-poll but instead support him.

On other partners of the MDA like the People’s Democratic Front (PDF) and the BJP trying to field their own candidates, Synrem said that the UDP cannot stop them for fielding a candidate.

He also said that if he wins the election, he will try to find ways and means to repair roads in the constituency or construct new ones where none exists.
