SHILLONG: In its determination to make the international border smuggling free, vigilant troops of the Border Security Force (BSF) Meghalaya on Saturday seized more than 1,200 bottles of liquor which were meant to be smuggled to Bangladesh from the West Garo Hills and South Garo Hills districts.

In Bangladesh, the consumption of alcohol is prohibited by law for religious reasons.

Nevertheless, alcohol is available across the country because the non-Muslims residing in the country or visiting the country are not subject to such restrictions as long as they confine their alcohol consumption to their private spaces.

There are government-approved alcohol-producing companies, which produce local brands but owing to fewer number of such alcohol distilleries and high prices, there is a high demand of comparatively cheaper Indian liquor in Bangladesh.

The BSF has identified vulnerable routes/patches used frequently by smugglers and are dominating them by deploying additional manpower and gadgets.

The BSF is maintaining high degree of alertness on the international border to maintain national security as well as to prevent all kind of trans-border crimes and illegal activities.
