BSF apprehends two smugglers from Garo Hills-Bangladesh border areas

SHILLONG: On February 7, BSF (Border Security Force) troopers deployed at BOP Rithingpara, 28 Bn BSF in South West Garo Hills of Meghalaya detected some suspicious movement of miscreants along the border. On being challenged, the miscreants tried to run away .

The BSF party chased the miscreant and apprehended a Bangladeshi smuggler identified as Md Akram (36 yrs) son of Abdul Gafur Miya, resident of village Hariya Kona under Mati Fata post office in Sherbordi Police Station of Sherpur district, Bangladesh. A mobile with two SIM cards was recovered from his possession.

In the other incident, BSF troops deployed at the Baghmara Border Outpost of 43 Bn BSF in South Garo Hills of Meghalaya apprehended one Indian smuggler identified as Selvuricus D. Sangma, resident of village Wagesik under Baghmara Police Station of South Garo Hills district, Meghalaya. The BSF team recovered three cattle worth Rs 24,000 and Indian currency amounting to Rs 98,500 from him. The apprehended Indian smuggler along with the seized items were handed over to Meghalaya Police for further course of action, stated a release.

U.K. Nayal, DIG/PRO said, "The cattle smugglers generally keep the cattle in thick forest for some time and try to cross them into Bangladesh taking advantage of the vulnerable patches through unfenced and treacherous border.''

Since there has been a steep rise in the smuggling attempts after the revocation of lockdown in Meghalaya, the BSF has intensified its operations on the Indo-Bangladesh Border which is creating severe dents in the trans- border syndicates deep indulged in smuggling activities, the release added..
