SHILLONG: Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma claimed on Friday that India is a diverse country, and our strength lies on that variety. Conrad Sangma claimed that the party's current position opposes the idea of India itself by advocating for a Uniform Civil Code.

Conrad Sangma went on to comment on the Center's choice to apply the UCC, “Of course, we have no idea what will transpire in terms of the type of Bill that will be released. It will be challenging to go into detail without seeing the draft's real text, but from a conceptual standpoint, we are a matrilineal society, and that has historically been both our strength and our culture. Because the entire northeast has a distinct culture and way of life, we would want those things to stay the same and not be altered. So, we must wait and watch what kind of Bill emerges.”

In the interim, the parliamentary standing committee on personnel, public grievances, law, and justice has announced plans to consult with stakeholders and set a meeting to examine the UCC.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made a strong push for a uniform civil code, and on July 3 the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice summoned representatives of the Law Commission and the law ministry in response to a notice it had issued. The Law Commission had published the notice in order to get opinions from interested parties on the topic of a uniform civil code.

The NPP is the head of the governing Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA), which is comprised of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA). In the state's 60-seat assembly, the BJP has two seats, while Mr. Sangma's party has 28.

Along with Meghalaya, the NPP enjoys significant political support in Manipur, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh. The party also has several MLAs in the four northeastern states.
