SHILLONG: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh have invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Shillong on 'Statehood Day' on January 21.

Speaker Lyngdoh along with Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi on Wednesday.

During the meeting, Metbah Lyngdoh submitted a letter to the Prime Minister urging him to extend financial assistance for completion of the construction work of the new building of Meghalaya Assembly at Mawdiangdiang.

"The work for the first phase started from 2018. The structural part of construction of the building is also progressing well. However, the construction work is hampered due to the lack of funds with the State Government," said the Meghalaya Assembly Speaker in his letter to Modi.

According to Lyngdoh, a DPR (Detailed Project Report) for the construction work has been prepared. The work is estiated to cost Rs. 517 crores approximately, with the first phase of Rs. 141,14,84,000 for construction (Civil Works) including furnishing of the Main Assembly building. The second phase estimated at a cost of Rs 361,86,82,733 wil be utilised for constructing the quarters of the Speaker, Deputy Speaker and all members with other facilities in the campus.

He informed the Prime Minister that the popular expectation is for early completion of the Assembly Building, adding that stress is being laid for completion of the construction before 2022 when the State wil be celebrating the 50 years of Statehood.
