SHILLONG: The Congress -- the main Opposition party in Meghalaya -- on Wednesday said that they will be writing to the partners supporting the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) coalition government to discuss the need for a new dispensation even as the party added that dismissing the government is not the ultimate solution.

"Let us be blunt. Since we are saying that the State is not is not in safe hands, we need to change the driver," said the leader of Opposition and leader of Opposition, Dr Mukul Sangma.

"On behalf of the CLP (Congress Legislature Party), we will be writing to the leaders of all the political parties who are in the government to put our heads together and have a deeeper look at how we can save the State; and also shield the interest of the masses. We will also have to find new ways to serve the people in the best possible ways. And, that can happen only when there is a course correction," added Dr Sangma.

The move of the Opposition Congress comes in the wake of the recent events in Shillong after the killing of ex-HNLC militant, Cheristerfield Thangkhiew, reportedly in an encounter with the Police.

The Opposition leader also called for transparency on all aspects. He further said that it is of utmost importance that the political parties should come together and discuss the burning issues of the State in the present circumstances.

"If they say no it is not necessary, it is up to them, but we feel that we should reach out. We feel that good sense would prevail," he added.
