Congress opposition stages walk out from Meghalaya Assembly

SHILLONG: The Opposition Congress in Meghalaya staged a walk out from the Assembly during the autumn session after the Speaker rejected their demand for a discussion on the issue to suspend police officers involved in the killing of former HNLC militant Cherishstarfield Thangkhiew.

Congress MLA from Mawlai -- whose motion was rejected on the suggestion of the government -- had raised a point of order posing questions over the incident related to the HNLC leader.

Leader of Opposition Dr Mukul Sangma pointed that the demand for suspension of the police officers concerned is not subjudice matter.

Before leading the Congress MLAs to walk out of the House, Dr Sangma said, "We will not engage in discussion and debate on this demand as the intent of the government is very clear. We walked out to demonstrate our disapproval and our complete lack of confidence on the intent of the government," added the Opposition leader.

Rejecting the demand, Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh said that he had accepted the letter from the government which basically refers to 'Rule 59' of the 'Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business' in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly which deals with motion for discussion on matters before tribunals commissions.

After staging the walk out from the House, the Congress MLAs marched in the corridors of the Assembly building shouting slogans against the government..
